Concerns are growing about the deciduous trees growing in Karatsu’s Niji-no-Matsubara, designated as a scenic attraction by the national government and one of the three most famous pine forests in Japan. Therefore, Saga Prefecture will begin work in the fall of 2009 to thin out the forest as a preservation measure. The funds for the work will come from a nuclear fuel recycling subsidy received from the national government for permitting the implementation of a pluthermal fuel recycling program at a nearby Kyushu Electric nuclear power plant, the first such plan to be put into practice in Japan.
