Oita Opens New RORO Terminal to Ease Freight Bottlenecks

A new terminal for RORO (roll-on/roll-off) vessels began operation in Oita Port’s Ozai District on May 24, aiming to ease Japan’s logistics strain amid a shortage of truck drivers, according to Oita Prefecture. The ¥20.2 billion project allows large cargo ships to dock without prior load adjustments and centralizes trailer chassis storage for faster processing.

With a berth depth of 9 meters—deeper than the previous terminal—the site supports larger vessels and has expanded from 6 to 21 hectares. Enhanced systems include automated check-in and space for 1,100 chassis.

Oita currently runs seven weekly RORO services, including a key route to Shimizu Port, handling double the volume seen in 2017. However, the transport sector cautions that full adoption of unmanned trailer shipping remains difficult due to financial and operational challenges facing small logistics firms.
