Mayor Soichiro Takashima laid out a new initiative for the creation of flower beds in the center of Fukuoka City at a press conference on Jan. 4. The initiative calls for one flower to be planted for each resident. If completed, approximately 1.57 million flowers will bloom throughout the period of this project. The city plans to obtain sponsorship from local companies so they can build flower beds in busy sections of the city such as Watanabe-dori and around Hakata Station. Locals are encouraged to post photographs of their own gardens and flower arrangements on the internet. Flowers will also be used to decorate the counters inside ward offices throughout the city. Mayor Takashima hopes to see the people of Fukuoka engage in the movement and work together to create a better city. Source: Mainichi Shimbun, 1/5/2018
