Orange Railway to Add Dining Car

Hisatsu Orange Railway, the third-sector company that operates trains between Yatsushiro, Kumamoto and Satsumasendai, Kagoshima, unveiled its new dining car, the Orange Café, to the press on Mar. 5. The “moving restaurant” will make its first run on Mar. 24 and aims to attract passengers with the elegant interior and beautiful scenery along the route. The design was supervised by Eiji Mitooka, an industrial designer whose work includes the Kyushu Shinkansen and several other local JR trains in Kyushu. Meals in the 23-seat dining car will be provided by partner restaurants located along the line.

The fare, including the meal, will be ¥12,800 per person. The train’s second car, dubbed the Living Car, will offer tea and other drinks for a fee of ¥1,400 plus the standard fare. The dining car is scheduled to make 215 trips per year on weekends and holidays and duration the summer vacation. For reservations, call 0966-63-6861.
