The Fukuoka City team in charge of refurbishing Fukuoka Castle, a national historic site, has discovered holes from pillars used to support mud walls. None of the pillars or walls from the Edo era remain, but this is the first time that pillar holes have been found within the castle site. The City says this is “an important piece of information that may shed some light on the overall structure the castle’s walls”. 18 evenly-spaced pillar holes, each about 1.3 to 1.5 meters in diameter and 1 meter deep, were uncovered when earth behind a stone wall was removed during renovation work. The site was documented with diagrams and photographs before renovation was allowed to continue. Roof tile fragments were found in one of the pillar holes, and the City hopes to date them and use them as another clue to unlocking the mystery of the how the castle’s walls actually looked.
