Kokurakita Ward is the central district of Kitakyushu, and in 2009, the population of that district rose for the first time in 27 years. The population of the ward stood at 228,000 in 1974, but had fallen every year since 1982 and reached 182,000 in 2008. It has become a popular place to live for people transferred to the city, in part because of the many high-rise condominiums that have been built there in recent years.
