The Prefectural Government announced that it will dispatch experts to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, to provide guidance on the construction of a new landfill using the Fukuoka Method, a semi-aerobic landfill system developed by Fukuoka City and Fukuoka University. This is the first time for the Prefecture to collaborate on the construction of a new Fukuoka Method landfill outside of Japan. The Fukuoka Method uses pipes to bring outside air into the middle of a landfill, thereby encouraging decomposition by microbes. It helps to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and filter leachates. According to Fukuoka City, landfills in dozens of Asian countries have been retrofitted to employ the Fukuoka Method, but since the cost of building landfills from scratch is more expensive, only two in China have been built in cooperation with Fukuoka University and Fukuoka City. Ground will be broken on the Hanoi landfill in September, and work is scheduled for completion next June.
