Fukuoka City announced on Dec. 5 plans for cobblestone pavement in the Hakata Tera Machi (Temple Town) area around Kushida Jinja Shrine and Jotenji Temple. The city hopes to create an added sense of history to the streets around the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum and cluster of local shrines, and to provide an interesting contrast to the urban surroundings. The news comes as Fukuoka City attempts to make the city more appealing to tourists ahead of the 2019 Rugby World Cup and 2021 World Aquatics Championships. The mayor of Fukuoka City expressed his desire to create streets that will capture the imagination of visitors from overseas and spark an interest in history amongst locals.
