Reprocessing Used Nuclear Fuel to Impact Electricity Prices

Kansai Electric Power Company customers look set to bear the brunt of construction costs for a plant in Rokkasho, Aomori Prefecture, which will extract plutonium from used nuclear fuel. Another proposed plant that will handle plutonium-uranium mixed oxide (MOX) fuel is also expected to have an impact on electricity prices. Kyushu Electric Power and other major companies in the industry are also planning to increase rates to cover the financial burden that goes with reprocessing spent nuclear fuel. The move will help facilitate nuclear fuel recycling. However, energy providers have been criticized for their failure to inform customers about a potential price hike.
