A section of the sidewalk and part of the roadway on National Route 202 (commonly known as Kokutai Road) in Fukuoka’s Chuo Ward collapsed on the morning of June 10. The hole measured roughly 1.5 meters in diameter and spanned both pedestrian and vehicle lanes. No injuries were reported. Authorities closed all four lanes of the road to prevent secondary incidents and are investigating the cause. Fukuoka City had been conducting sewage pipe installation work nearby, and officials are probing potential links to the collapse. Heavy rain, totaling 21 mm in one hour before the incident, may also be a contributing factor. Mayor Soichiro Takashima visited the site, which lies near the Tenjin commercial district.
