Saga Prefectural University Set to Open in April 2029

Saga Prefecture has announced that the new Saga Prefectural University will officially open in April 2029. The decision, made after extensive discussions and planning, comes as part of the prefecture’s efforts to establish a new higher education institution aimed at meeting the evolving educational needs of the region.

The university will be located in Saga City, utilizing the current Saga General Government Building site. The initial plan, announced in July, suggested an opening date of April 2028 or later. However, following further coordination and assessments, the prefecture has determined that April 2029 is the optimal date for the launch.

In preparation for the university’s establishment, the Saga Prefectural Government has included approximately 660 million yen in the fiscal year’s September supplementary budget proposal. This budget allocation is intended for the design and construction of new school buildings and the partial demolition and renovation of existing facilities at the Saga General Government Building. The budget proposal will be presented at the Saga Prefectural Assembly’s September session, starting on September 11.

The new university aims to offer a wide range of academic programs to address local needs and attract students from across Japan and internationally. It will focus on providing education in fields that are particularly relevant to Saga Prefecture, such as agriculture, regional development, environmental studies, and information technology, reflecting the region’s economic and social priorities.

Saga Prefecture Governor Yoshinori Yamaguchi emphasized that the university’s establishment will support the local community by fostering talent, promoting innovation, and enhancing the regional economy. The new institution is also expected to collaborate with local industries and businesses to offer practical, hands-on learning opportunities and create a workforce aligned with the region’s growth needs.

The university’s establishment marks a significant development in the prefecture’s long-term educational strategy, aimed at boosting local development and retaining young talent within the region. Source: KBC
