Saga’s First Nori Auction Sets Record High Prices

Saga Prefecture’s first nori seaweed auction of the season, held on November 28, saw record-breaking prices. A total of approximately 1.1 billion sheets of nori were sold at an average price of ¥35.23, marking a ¥1.33 increase over last year’s record and nearly double the five-year average.

The quality of nori this year has been exceptional, thanks to favorable marine conditions, including higher-than-average water temperatures and abundant nutrients. Producers from all fishing cooperatives in the area reported vibrant color and excellent flavor, with no discoloration observed for the first time in four years.

Although the premium “Ariake Ichiban” brand was not available due to strict quality standards, industry officials remain optimistic, aiming for 16 billion sheets in total sales and a revenue target of ¥23.2 billion this season. Source: NHK
