Kagoshima City has launched the Sakurajima Volcano Disaster Prevention Institute, the first municipality-established research facility in Japan dedicated to volcano disaster preparedness. The institute, which opened on April 1, employs six staff members and aims to strengthen disaster response planning, including wide-area evacuation strategies in the event of a major eruption from Sakurajima. It will also monitor volcanic activity, including eruptions, seismic events, and crustal deformation, and work toward implementing systems to forecast ash fall distribution. The institute is led by Professor Emeritus Masato Iguchi of Kyoto University. Source: NHK
