Sakurajima Volcano Erupts – 33 Households Evacuated

On the evening of July 24, Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture erupted explosively, sending large cinders flying as far as 2.5 km from the crater. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an eruption warning for Sakurajima and raised the eruption alert level to evacuation, the highest level (Level 5), and urged residents within approximately 3 km of the crater to be on high alert for large cinders.

The JMA is urging people to be on high alert for large cinder cones at the summit crater of Minamidake and parts of Arimura and Furusato towns in Kagoshima City within 3 km of the Showa crater and to evacuate according to information from local authorities.

This is the second time the JMA has raised the eruption alert level to 5 since it introduced the level for volcanoes nationwide in 2007 and the first time for Sakurajima since it announced the level for Kuchinoerabujima in Kagoshima Prefecture in 2015.

The city has issued evacuation orders for a total of 33 households and 51 people in parts of Arimura-machi and Furusato-machi on Sakurajima and announced on the evening of March 24 that it had confirmed the evacuation of all the targeted households.
