It is prime harvesting time for many species of seafood, and the Funakoshi Fishing Port in Itoshima is running at full tilt. Stop by the port now and the one fish you’ll notice more than any other is the madai, or red sea bream. In fact, Itoshima is one of Japan’s main landing spots for wild sea bream. You can buy fresh fish from roadside stands in several parts of Itoshima, many of which will fillet the fish for you free of charge. If you like your seafood really fresh, as in raw, then go no further than Shimanoshiki (inside JF Itoshima) for a ¥980 kaisendon (seafood bowl).
