The Nishinippon Shimbun reports that historic yen appreciation is driving the large semiconductor manufacturers to shift their Kyushu-based production overseas. There are concerns about the future of Kyushu as “Silicon Island”, a reputation it gained over more than 40 years, during which period manufacturers and related companies established a presence here. Much of the production capacity is moving to Indonesia, Vietnam, and Singapore.
