A survey by the Nishinippon Shimbun of Kyushu’s 10 primary cities found a sharp increase in March for welfare benefit disbursement from the previous year. This was attributed to the number of people who lost their jobs due to poor economic conditions. The number of households receiving welfare in Fukuoka City totaled 21,096, the highest ever. There also was a 7% increase from the previous year in Saga City.
