Kyushu Electric Power purchases the unused power generated by homes and businesses with solar power equipment on a contract basis. The number of these contracts totaled 19,700 in FY 2009, 2.9 times more than the previous year. The utility has contracts of this time for more than 100,000 units in all, the second-highest of all utility companies nationwide. That is attributed to the greater hours of sunlight in Kyushu.
