The Kyushu District Transport Bureau released statistics showing that orders for ship construction for companies in Kyushu and western Yamaguchi Prefecture in 2008 fell 23% from the previous year. This was attributed to the diminished demand for car carriers due to the economic turndown. This was the second consecutive year-on-year decline.
