Shipment Volume of Miyazaki Shochu Highest in Japan

The Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association (JSS), announced that the shipment volume of authentic Miyazaki shochu was the highest in Japan for a third consecutive year. Sales of the famous imo (sweet potato) shochu Kuro Kirishima, which is made in Miyazaki by the Kirishima Distillery, were particularly noteworthy. Kagoshima Prefecture ranked second while Oita was third. The total sake shipment volume from July 2016 to June 2017 was down 0.6% compared to the previous year, but production of authentic shochu in the seven prefectures of Kyushu is thriving and accounted for as much as 90% of the total figure. Miyazaki shipments increased by 5.2% while Kagoshima decreased by 4.3% and Oita was down 1.6% in the same period. Miyazaki shochu was praised for its subtle color, gentle flavor, and ability to be matched with any local cuisine. Source: Sankei West, 8/28/2017
