The traditional shiro-uo (ice goby) fishing season has resumed in Fukuoka’s Muromi River for the first time in three years, following a pause due to declining fish numbers. Volunteers and members of the Murokawa Shiro-uo Association installed “yana” traps in mid-February to monitor fish stocks. On February 25, the first catch yielded 88 fish, a modest start, but fishermen expect numbers to increase. Shiro-uo, a translucent goby species about 5 cm long, ascends rivers to spawn from late February to early April. Fishing will continue until the end of March. Source: NHK
