Shorter School Summer Vacations in Fukuoka

It was revealed from the general inquiry session at a meeting of the City Assembly on June 25 that the Fukuoka City Board of Education is thinking about shortening the summer vacation for elementary and junior high schools because air conditioners are scheduled to be installed in all schools by fiscal 2016. Schools in Fukuoka City currently receive 42 days off for summer vacation, but this could be revised since air conditioning will make it easier to study. While the exact number of vacation days was not made known, it appears the BOE is moving to make the school year longer starting in FY2017. The Superintendent of schools, Tatsuhiko Sakai, said he plans to revise the necessary laws after listening to the opinions of school officials, parents, local community members and the City Assembly. According to Enforcement Ordinance of the School Education Act, each municipality has the authority to determine the length of summer and other vacations for public schools.
