Singapore Drama Filming Begins In Saga

Filming has begun in Saga City for a Singaporean TV drama directed by award-winning filmmaker Mahfuz Muhammad. The story follows his great-great-grandmother, Haranishi Tsubasa, a Japanese woman who emigrated to Singapore during the Meiji era in search of freedom. The period drama is being shot at the historic former Koga residence, built in 1884. Mahfuz chose Saga for its resemblance to rural Southeast Asia and personal ties to his Japanese ancestry. The 10-episode series, titled Haranishi Zubaidah, will air on Singapore’s national broadcaster Mediacorp next year. Saga’s film commission, which previously saw success attracting Thai productions, hopes to draw more international projects. Source: Saga Prefecture Film Commission / KBC
