Fukuoka’s Single-Person Households Projected to Surge by 2050

A national study projects that 46.4% of all households in Fukuoka Prefecture will consist of single occupants by 2050, the fourth-highest rate in Japan after Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Total households in Fukuoka are expected to decrease slightly to 2.26 million by 2050, while the average household size will drop below two people by 2030.

The increase in single-person households is attributed to rising unmarried rates and declining birth rates. Among these, seniors aged 65 and older are expected to make up 20.2% of all households by 2050, posing challenges for community support systems to ensure their well-being and safety.
