According to a survey conducted by the Fukuoka Branch of Teikoku Databank, 59% of supermarkets in the Kyushu and Okinawa region with sales of at least ¥1 billion experienced decreased revenues due to intensified competition with discount stores and convenience stores. Figures show that the smaller a store is in terms of overall sales, the less a chance it has of posting gains. Due to increased competition and higher prices on the back of the weak yen, more supermarkets are finding it difficult to pass on savings to their customers. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 9/20
