Softbank Hawks’ manager and Japanese baseball great Sadaharu


Oh gave a press conference in Fukuoka City to announce that he will retire from baseball as of the end of the season. The man who guided Japan’s team to victory in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, and who hit a record 868 home runs during a 22-season career, gave as his reason health problems following surgery for stomach cancer two years ago. The Hawks were the champions of Japanese baseball in 1999 and 2003 under his tenure. His replacement is expected to be head coach Koji Akiyama.
