The Imari Shinto shrine in Imari, Saga Prefecture, is planning to resume its Tontenton fall festival after a two-year suspension that was put in place after the death of a high school student. The festival, however, will prohibit the participation of spectator participation and alcohol consumption, factors that contributed to the boy’s death. Part of the festival involves two teams carrying mikoshi, or portable shrines, which try to topple the other team and its mikoshi into the river. That competition will not be held.
