The Kyushu Economic Research Center (KERC) issued a white paper on January 31, outlining how sports tourism could help draw in new visitors to the region. KREC believes that there is a major opportunity for growth in the industry and that the local economy can benefit by promoting the area to people who are planning to visit in order to view or participate in sporting events. Kyushu is set to welcome a large number of sports fans this year with Fukuoka, Kumamoto, and Oita scheduled to host games for Rugby World Cup 2019. Kagoshima will stage the National Athletic Meet in 2021, which will mean that southern Kyushu is also likely to attract a lot of attention. Source: Sankei Shimbun, 2/1/2019
