In an attempt to reverse further decline in population, Oita City is now offering free trial stays in its countryside areas of Notsuharu and Saganosekimachi. The project hopes to showcase the liveability of the towns, to encourage more people to move there. Notsuharu (pop. 4,822) is a mountain town, and Saganoseki Machi (pop. 10,748) a fishing town famous for its seki aji (horse mackerel). Both towns, approx. 50 mins from downtown Oita by car, are facing serious population decline problems and have high percentages of elderly residents. During the “trial stay” period, Saganosekimachi will open a traditional guest house “Minshuku” to the public for free accommodation, whilst Notsuharu will open its community center. Guests are welcome stay at these venues for a maximum of 4 nights/5 days free of charge (meals not incl.). During the stay, guests can also enjoy a range of activities– e.g. fishing, local cooking, agriculture, mountain walking tours– guided by locals at no extra cost. Oita City has already started recruiting participants for the project. Foreigners are welcome (basic Japanese skill is required to communicate with locals)! For more info: 097-537-7025.
