Study Shows Hardship of Kyushu-based Zanryu-houjin

A recent survey revealed that over 60% of those born to zanryu-houjin parents (Japanese individuals who remained in China after WWII) in China have lived on welfare in Fukuoka and some other areas. The Kyushu organization of the Japan-China Friendship Association conducted the first survey to understand the experiences of zanryu-houjin’s children and about the hardships they have faced. More than half of them came to Japan to take care of their aged parents who returned to Japan in the earlier years, while governmental support was limited. Over 80% of those who came to Japan in their 30s still face language barriers, preventing them from getting paying jobs. Source: NHK
