Survey Shows 42 Major Companies in Favor of Spring Wage Hike

Kyushu’s leading companies’ executives discussed wage hikes amid rising prices. Kyushu Electric Power Co’s president, Kazuhiro Ikebe, declined to make a clear statement but expressed that labor costs must go up in the long term. Saibu Gas Holdings President, Yukinori Michinaga, showed a positive attitude towards the issue and will consider a comprehensive decision, taking into account the Japanese economy and other factors. A survey by NHK showed 42 out of 100 major firms were positive about raising wages. Many companies, especially SMEs, still face challenges from rising raw material prices and the new coronavirus impact, creating uncertainty about the spread of the wage hike movement. Source: NHK
