Nearly all 2,000 tairagi (pen shells) in Isahaya Bay, Nagasaki Prefecture have been dissipated. The Nagasaki Prefectural Institute of Fisheries confirmed that fresh water ran into the bay following the heavy rainfall across western Japan. This created an uninhabitable environment for the tairagi, which were moved into the flat in May as part of the prefecture’s ongoing efforts to increase the number of shellfish and bivalvia. A detailed investigation into what happened will be carried out in due course. Source: Nagasaki Shimbun, 7/15/2018
