Teleworking on The Rise in Fukuoka, but Kyushu Overall Lags

In response to the ongoing state of emergency, a growing number of workers in Kyushu are teleworking. An online survey conducted by Persol Research and Consulting Co., Ltd., revealed that 23.8% of regular employees (‘seishain’) in Fukuoka Prefecture are teleworking as of mid-April; a considerable increase from just 10.3% in mid-March. Meanwhile, the entire Kyushu saw a teleworking rate of 16.6%, which was far lower than the national average of 27.9%. The company points out the significance of promptly introducing new work styles in each region, regardless of the seemingly low risks of COVID-19 spread in some areas. On the same day, Fukuoka City Subway announced lower ridership on its trains and asked people for further cooperation in refraining from outings. The subway saw a decrease of approximately 70% of its passengers during the first weekend after the declaration of the state of emergency (Apr. 11 ~ Apr. 12) and about 50% on weekdays (Apr. 13 ~ Apr. 16.)
