On Nov. 4, about 12.000 cranes were confirmed to be living in Izumiheiya, Kagoshima, a known wintering spot for cranes. It was the first count of the season and this is the 20th year that more than 10,000 cranes have been counted at the location. Starting at dawn, 100 students from a local middle school counted the cranes using telescopes. They counted 11,617 hooded cranes and 244 white-naped cranes. The study will be carried out another six times until January next year. Source: Mainichi Shinbun, 11/4
