Tenjin Underground Mall in central Fukuoka will mark its 50th anniversary in September, with operators aiming to appeal more strongly to office workers and inbound tourists. Opened in 1976, the mall currently has 146 stores and sees daily foot traffic of around 200,000 to 300,000 people. Sales for the year ended September 2025 rose 13% to a record ¥22.5 billion, reflecting strong tourism and surrounding redevelopment in the Tenjin area. President Toshiaki Amamoto said the tenant mix will be adjusted to meet changing needs while remaining rooted in the local community. Commemorative events include distributing limited-edition bookmarks featuring the mall’s iconic stained-glass designs. Source: TNC News / Nikkei
