Three Prefectures Release Genkai Evacuation Estimates

The three prefectural governments of Fukuoka, Saga and Nagasaki released a report detailing evacuation scenarios in the event of a major disaster at the Genkai Nuclear Power Plant in Genkai Town, Saga Prefecture. The report estimates it would take at least 17 hours and five minutes to evacuate the 273,000 residents living in the 11 municipalities within the 30 km evacuation radius. It also estimates an evacuation time of 42 hours and 25 minutes during peak travel times when traffic is highly congested. Given that there was a hydrogen explosion at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant about 18 hours after evacuation orders were issued, it appears that local governments around Genkai will have to rethink their evacuation plans.
