Toyota Delays Fukuoka EV Battery Plant

Toyota Motor Corporation has again postponed construction of its electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Kanda, Fukuoka Prefecture. Governor Seitaro Hattori said the delay was unavoidable given the global slowdown in EV demand. Toyota purchased a 280,000-square-meter site for about ¥6 billion and initially planned to begin production in 2028. The company will now spend about a year revising its business plan, which may further delay operations or shift production toward other vehicle-related products. While Hattori dismissed the possibility of withdrawal, the decision follows Nissan’s cancellation of a similar project in Kitakyushu, underscoring growing uncertainty for Japan’s EV strategy amid tightening subsidies and weak global sales.
