Excavations of ancient ruins in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, have uncovered a rutted road dating to the 8th century. The ruts are in three places: the middle of the road, and on both edges. Archaeologists think the ruts were for ox-driven carts, and that the placement of the ruts shows that rudimentary traffic rules were already in existence at that time.
