Culture Convenience Club Co., the operator of the TSUTAYA bookstore chain, announced that it will open “Kyushu University Ito Tsutaya Bookstore” in the spring of 2023. The Kyushu University Ito Store will be part of a project to develop a “next-generation research and development center” based on the concept of “a center that serves as a ‘nexus’ to foster knowledge, sensitivity, and creativity,” and the project is being led by a group headed by Daiwa House Industry Co. Other group companies besides Daiwa House Industry are Saibu Gas Urban Development, Kyushu TSUTAYA, Seikou, and Daiwa Information Service. The project will include the construction of an R&D building (rental office/laboratory), a commercial building (BOOK&CAFE), a tenant building, and a residential building (rental apartments for students). Mizoe Construction Co., Ltd. will be in charge of the commercial building’s design and construction. Although some questioned the decision to open a new real bookstore in an age when reading is done on smartphones and tablets, Tsutaya has now grown into a brand that can attract a reasonable number of customers.
