Typhoon No. 12 Update

The season’s 12th typhoon (Namtheun) is expected to bring very heavy rainfall and strong winds over the next few days in Kyushu and western Japan. Please take precautionary measures by avoiding low-lying areas, shorelines of rivers and coastal regions until the storm passes. Also, please be certain to follow instructions issued by your local municipalities, as well as updated news and local weather forecasts. Prediction as of Friday, Sep. 2, at 18:00: The Japan Meteorological Agency warns of high waves and the possibility of landslides caused by heavy rainfall in the coming days. As of Sep. 2 at 17:00, the typhoon was moving north at 15 km/h, passing 180 km to the southeast of Amami Oshima. Wind speeds within a 60 km radius of the typhoon measured as high as 25 m/s. On Sep. 3, southern Kyushu is expected to experience very strong winds before noon (wind speed reaching a maximum of 40 m/s, and gusts 55 m/s). Waves in the area are predicted to reach as high as 7 m. From the late afternoon of Sep. 3, Kyushu will experience heavy rainfall and thunder. West Japan will continue to experience heavy rainfall and lightning after Sep. 4 (Sun.). Note, conditions can worsen very quickly, so be prepared and check weather updates frequently.
