Typhoon No. 24 Approaching Kyushu

The Japan Meteorological Agency is issuing advisories for this season’s 24th typhoon (TRAMI). It will bring heavy rains and strong winds to the Okinawa Islands and is expected to pass over Kyushu and then move onto Honshu. Monitor the Japan Meteorological Agency’s website for updates.

As of Friday, Sep. 28 the center of the typhoon is reaching maximum wind speeds of 60 m/s, but the wind speed is expected to accelerate to 65~70 m/s. As the typhoon is moving slowly, strong winds and heavy rain are expected to last for a long time. Okinawa and Amami are expected to be hit the hardest, with very heavy rainfall on Saturday, as much as 80 mm per hour. The southern half of Kyushu is forecasted to receive 200 mm of rain on Sep. 29 (Sat.) and 300~500 mm on Sep. 30 (Sun.). Rainfall on Sunday in the northern regions of Kyushu, including Fukuoka City, is expected to be between 200~300 mm.

People living in or traveling in affected areas should take all basic precautions. Keep yourselves informed with the link mentioned above and keep in contact with neighbors and others in your community.
