On Mar. 23 the Fukuoka-based United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific released the Japanese version of UN-Habitat’s International Guidelines on Urban and Territorial Planning. Discussions on the Guidelines began in 2013, and meetings were held in France, Columbia and Fukuoka (in Nov. 2014) before they were finalized. The Guidelines showcase a wide range of good practices for community development and urban planning, including initiatives undertaken by Fukuoka City to create a compact, liveable city. According to the UN-Habitat homepage, “The Guidelines will provide national governments, local authorities and planning professionals with a global reference framework that promotes socially inclusive and better integrated and connected cities and territories that will foster sustainable urban development that will be resilient to climate change.” Source: UN-Habitat official website, 3/23
