Unprecedented Downpour: Four Dead, Two Missing in Japanese Prefectures

In a deluge unprecedented in recent memory, Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures were beset by heavy rainstorms beginning in the early hours of the 10th. These events resulted in four fatalities and two individuals currently unaccounted for.

In the small town of Soeda, located in Tagawa District, a landslide swept into the single-story wooden house of Toshitaka Matsuoka (74) around 3:30 am on the 10th. Both Matsuoka and his wife were trapped within their home. While Matsuoka was safely rescued and his life is not in danger, his wife sadly did not survive.

In the Sanmyouji district of Kurume City, seven houses were caught in a mudslide. Ten people were rescued, but one individual was found in cardiac arrest and was later confirmed dead at the hospital. In Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, two houses were inundated by landslides, leading to lost contact with two men and one woman. The woman’s death has been confirmed, while the two men are yet to be located.

In the town of Hirokawa, located in Yame District, an elderly man was found in a light truck that had been pinned by an irrigation channel. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was also confirmed dead. Source: KBC
