Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the Fukuoka City Zoo recorded more than 80,000 monthly visitors in September for the first time in 26 years. New houses for its sun bears and leopards are proving popular, and annual admissions are on pace to exceed the 800,000 mark for the first time in 16 years. According to the Zoo, admissions in September are usually lower due to the residual heat of summer, but thanks to new attractions, 81,848 people visited the Zoo last month. The Fukuoka City Zoo opened in 1953. Visitor numbers peaked in 1980 at 1.72 million per year and have been declining steadily as wide array of entertainment facilities have opened since then. The City initiated a 20-year Zoo renewal project in 2006, and so far new enclosures have been added for the elephants, orangutans and other animals. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 10/1
