8 Weekend Events for Fukuoka

Stuck for something to do this weekend? We’ve got you covered with everything from Oktoberfest and Halloween events to a free day at the zoo and more! Here are Fukuoka Now staff’s picks for weekend activities for this Saturday and Sunday …

Event 1 ::: Fukuoka Oktoberfest 10/26 (Fri.)~ 10/28 (Sun.) @ Reisen Park
One of Hakata’s Autumn fixtures, this grand festival attracts droves of revellers. Enjoy a wide selection of German beer, sausages and other traditional foods and breads as an authentic German folk band performs in a huge tent. There’s even an 1800s-style merry-go-round from Germany! “Prost!”

Event 2 ::: BOOK at ME 2012 10/26~ (Sat.) @ IMS Plaza B2F
The Japan Graphic Designers Association will hold the fourth annual “BOOK at ME” book cover exhibition event at IMS Plaza. This year’s theme is “Kanjiru design – Design with feeling”. Get lost in the display of 100 original book covers designed by 100 Kyushu artists. Vote for your favourite cover to go in the draw to win a set of 10 book covers. Don’t forget to take home a free bookmark!

Event 3 ::: Kaguyahime Parade 10/27 (Sat.) @ Around Tenjin (Kego shrine~Maizuru Park, Nishi Hiroba)
ukuoka’s newest autumn festival “Fukuoka Matsuri Gekkasai” debuts tomorrow 10/27 (Sat.) in the Tenjin area. The parade is based on the oldest Japanese children’s fairytale “Story of Taketori” which was written at the beginning of Heian period. The main character of the story is Taketori’s beautiful stepdaughter ‘Kaguya-hime’, whom the parade honors. For the main parade, one of three mikoshi (divine palanquin/portable shrine) will carry the actress playing the moon princess “Kaguyahime” along with a procession of around 300 female students from Maizuru Primary School and locals wearing traditional Heian period costumes. At ten spots on the course, including Iwataya, the Kaguyahime will come down from the mikoshi and dance. It’s the first time for this parade to happen in Tenjin area. As part of the festival there is also a Kaguyahime dance display at Maizuru Park from 12:00~13:00, and local music performances on a temporary stage at Kego Shrine from 10:00~20:00. The festival’s finale features special guests- pop duo “ISIS”, who will perform at Kego Shrine from 19:15~.

Event 4 ::: Oyafuko Halloween Night Walker 10/27 (Sat.) @ Oyafuko Dori (45 locations)
Halloween prowl! 45 different clubs and bars in the Oyafuko Street area– including Club X, The Voodoo Lounge, AIR and MUSK– will participate in “Oyafuko Halloween Night Walker”. ¥1,000 gets you a wristband that permits entry at all 45 clubs (plus additional ¥500 drink ticket per club). Four of the clubs are also holding costume contests with big prizes for the best dressed! You can win ¥50,000! (1st prize), ¥30,000(2nd prize) ¥20,000 (3rd prize)! Event 5 ::: Halloween @ Hard Rock Cafe 10/27 (Sat.) @ Jigyohama
Hard Rock Cafe Fukuoka is celebrating Halloween with three big events! Things kick off this weekend with a “Halloween Special Live” event on Oct. 27 (Sat.), featuring Motley Crue tribute band “Dr. Feel Good” who will play two sets from 19:00~ and 21:00~. The second day is for the little ones, with a “Halloween Kids Party” on Oct. 28 (Sun.), featuring a kids’ costume contest and parade through the Hawks Town Mall (contest reception ~13:30, contest start 14:00). The third and final event is the “Halloween Rockers Party” on Oct. 31 (Wed.) featuring the annual Hard Rock Halloween costume contest. Who will win the title of Mr. & Mrs. Halloween Rocker 2012? The contest starts at 20:00, with great prizes up for grabs! All three events are free, and the staff at Hard Rock will be getting into the spirit with full costumes every night!

Event 6 ::: Hakata Halloween 2012 10/28 (Sun.) @ Hakata Riverain~Canal City Hakata
Make a creepy or creative costume and enter this yearly Halloween parade and contest in Hakata. Usually, over 400 parents and kids participate! This year the parade runs between Hakata Riverain and Canal City. Apply by 10/17 to join the parade. After the parade, there’s a costume contest with ¥200,000 first prize, ¥100,000 second prize and ¥50,000 “audience’s choice” prize!

Event 7 ::: Golden Oldies Rugby Parade 10/28 (Sun.) @ Meiji Dori
From Oct. 28 (Sun.), Rugby lovers over the age of 35 from across the globe will gather for the annual “Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival 2012 ”– held for the first time in Fukuoka! An opening ceremony is happening this Sunday (10/28), including a grand parade to welcome the Golden Oldies. The 1km parade down Meiji Dori will feature approx. 2,000 participants, including the rugby players and their families in fun Halloween-style costumes, along with local cheerleaders, children’s rugby teams, dancers, Fukuoka City officers and other citizen groups. Come down, cheer them on and welcome the Golden Oldies to our city!

Event 8 ::: Free Entry – Zoo and More Green Spots 10/28 (Sun.)@ various locations
Every October, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism holds an “Urban Tree Planting Campaign”. As part of this year’s campaign, the City will open five outdoor facilities to the public for free on Oct. 28 (Sun.)– Fukuoka Municipal Zoo & Botanical Gardens, Yūsentei Park, Rakusui-en and Shofu-en. The aim of the day is to encourage Fukuoka citizens to enjoy the beautiful natural spots that the city has to offer.
