There were 1,011 cases of HIV infection and 437 cases of AIDS reported in 2016 – a combined total of 1,448 cases. For the past 13 years, the number of cases of HIV and AIDS has been over 1,000 each year. In Fukuoka City, there were 28 cases of HIV infection in 2016 and 35 cases of AIDS – a combined total of 63, a new record high. However, these figures include only those who were tested, meaning there are more people going about their daily lives unaware that they have been infected.
