On the first day of this festival, three portable shrines are carried 900 steps (200 m) down Mt. Hikosan. On the second, priests rush them back up to cheering crowds. This gojinkosai (ritual transfer of a god’s body away from its main shrine) dates back to when asceticism was popular in the area. Lion dances too!
