Accommodation Vacancies Drop to Record Lows

Preliminary figures revealed that 78 million international visitors to Japan stayed in hotels and ryokan (traditional style inns) during 2017. This represented a 12.4% increase compared to the previous year. The growth rate was particularly high in regions such as Tohoku and Kyushu, which was in large part due to low cost airlines establishing new flight routes with these locations. Prefectural figures reveal that Aomori (60.3%) saw the most dramatic increase in number of visitors compared to 2016, followed by Oita (59.3%), Saga (51.9%), and Kumamoto (51.7%). The nationwide room occupancy rate for accommodation facilities during 2017, which takes into consideration both Japanese and international guests, reached 60.8%. This corresponded to a 1.1% increase from 2016. Osaka (83.1%) recorded the highest occupancy rate in the country, followed by Tokyo (80.1%), and Fukuoka (72.7%). Source: Sankei Shimbun, 3/1/2018
