Department Stores in Kyushu and Yamaguchi Report Good Sales

Hatsuuri or the first sales of the New Year did well in department stores across Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is believed that good weather conditions and an upturn in the economy helped many commercial facilities record better sales figures than in previous years. Fukubukuro (lucky bags) which included experience-based activities and high-end products are reported to have gone down particularly well with shoppers. Iwataya and Mitsukoshi department stores’ fukubukuro costing approximately ¥50,000 sold out, while Fukuoka Parco’s sales for Jan. 2 was ¥249 million, which was an all-time record for the store, while sales in Hakata Daimaru on the same day increased by 2% compared to last year.
