Extreme Weather Conditions Result in Landslides at 300 Locations

The extent of the damage caused by recent torrential downpours in northern Kyushu is still being tallied. As many as 300 locations in mountainous areas of Asakura City and Toho Village experienced landslides. Fukuoka Prefecture has announced that the weight of fallen trees swept away in these two locations could be up to 200,000 tons. Areas in Asakura and Toho nearby the upstream sections of the Chikugo River experienced numerous landslides ranging from a few meters to tens of meters in scale. Temporary shelters have been constructed in the area, but shortages are expected and the huge amount of driftwood could prove a hindrance to reconstruction efforts.
